The caster can make an Intelligence check. If successful, the caster learns the forumla and process for making the target, and can retain it in their memory. If this check fails, the caster is confused by the information, cannot remember it, and also cannot try to learn the formula for the target again until they have advanced at least one experience level.
The information gained from the spell varies with caster level.
- At 5th level, the caster can learn the ingredients and process for making a non-magical item, such as a chocolate cake, or alchemist's fire.
- At 9th level, the caster can learn the ingredients and forumla for making a magical liquid, such as a potion, an elixir, or scroll ink.
- At 14th level, the caster can learn the forumla for creating any non-unique magic item, such as a magic sword, a magical cloak, or a magical horn.
Magic items react badly to this spell. Consumable magic items analyzed by this spell are destroyed. Reusable magic items must make a saving throw vs. disintigration or explode in a blast of magic that deals 4d8 damage to the caster.
