A character proficient in Animal Training can domesticate a wild animal and can train a domestic animal to do a particular trick on commmand or to perform some general task. When the proficiency is chosen, the character selects a specific type of creature that they can train - common choices include dogs, horses, falcons, pigeons, elephants, ferrets, and parrots. More exotic creatures, and monsters with animal intelligence, can also be the subject of the Animal Training proficiency. The trainer can work with up to 3 creatures at one time. Any one creature can learn 2d4 tricks or tasks, in any combination.

Taming a Wild Animal[]

A wild animal can be tamed only when very young. After one month of working with the creature, make a proficiency check. On a success, the animal is tamed and can be trained. On a failure, the creature remains wild (though it can still be caged or leashed).

Training to Perform a Trick[]

A specific trick teaches the trained creature to do one specific action. A horse may rear on command, a falcon may pluck a designated object, a dog may attack a specific person, or a rat may run through a particular maze. Training for a specific trick requires 2d6 weeks. At the end of the training time, a proficiency check is made. If successful, the animal is trained. If the die roll fails, the beast is untrainable.

Training for a General Task[]

A general task gives the creature the ability to react to a number of nonspecific commands to do its job. Examples of tasks include guard and attack, carry a rider, perform heavy labor, hunt, track, or fight alongside soldiers (such as a war horse or elephant). Training for a general task requires three months of uninterrupted work. At the end of the training time, a proficiency check is made. If successful, the animal is trained. If the die roll fails, the beast is untrainable.

Skills & Powers[]

CP 4, Initial Rating 5, Wisdom(Willpower) or Charisma(Leadership)

In this version of the proficiency, a proficient character automatically trains a creature if they spend the required time. Monsters might require more frequent proficiency checks to train. A character with the animal empathy trait gains a +1 bonus to this proficiency rating.
