Blast spikes are dwarven mining tools, often used to shatter rock and remove blockages. Each one is a fine steel wedge, about as long as a human hand, looking something like a large tack. The blast spikes act as normal steel spikes much of the time - until struck with another blast spike.
The typical use of a blast spike is to hammer one into the obstruction or rock that needs to be blasted away, and then, using a 40-ft disposable pole with another blast spike on the end, touch the two spikes together. This causes an explosion that reaches about 30 ft. from the installed spike, which is used to break apart rock walls.
In a pinch, a single blast spike makes a solid weapon, dealing 1d4 damage to anyone hit with one simply because of hte heavy, fine steel they are made with. A single spike can be dropped, hammered, or used in any way a steel spike may be useful - many have served as climbing holds in deep dwarven caverns for hundreds of years.
If two blast spikes touch, they explode violently. Any creatures unfortunate enough to be within 30 ft. of the explosion take 5d4 damage from the flying shrapnel of the two spikes and the stone (a save vs. spell is allowed for half damage, but not for creatures touching either spike at the time of explosion). In the heat of combat, touching two spikes to each other at a distance (such as by throwing one spike, or jabbing one with another on the end of a pole) requires an attack roll, with any relevant penalties for nonproficiency.
Those climbing while using a blast spike that explodes take damage, and may fall. They are allowed to make a Strength check and a Dexterity check to avoid falling - if either check succeeds, they can remain where they were (though now more full of shrapnel). If both checks fail, the explosion wrenches the character violently from their perch, possibly striking other beings or obstacles, and at any rate dealing an additional 1d8 damage (in addition to whatever they may take from falling).
