Turns an item into an explosive trap.

AD&DEdit

Fire Trap
Fire trap spell
Edit

Debuted in the Player's Handbook as a druid spell and a magic-user spell.

DruidEdit

Level: 2 School: Evocation
Components: V, S, M (holly berries and a stick of charcoal to outline the closure)
Range: Touch Casting Time: 1 turn
Duration: Permanent Saving Throw: Halves
Target: Object touched

A closable item is trapped so that when opened, it explodes. The caster can use the trapped object without discharging toe trap, but if any other creature opens it, it explodes in a 5' radius, all creatures within making saving throws. The explosion deals 1d4 damage, +1 damage per caster level. The trapped object is not harmed by the explosion.

The spell interacts unusually with other spells. It negates a hold portal spell, taking effect on the object instead (and is similarly negated by a hold portal spell). It also negates a wizard lock spell (though a wizard lock spell has a 50% chance to negate it). A knock spell doesn't affect a fire trap at all. There is only a 50% chance for detect magic to notice a fire trap, and once detected, the fire trap activates immediately.

DM's Advice: The spell can be negated normally by a dispel magic.

Magic-UserEdit

Level: 4 School: Evocation
Components: V, S, M (a bit of sulphur or saltpeter to outline the closure)
Range: Touch Casting Time: 3 rounds
Duration: Permanent Saving Throw: Halves
Target: Object touched
