The mulworm is a small, toxic caterpillar. The poison is secrets causes a painful, numbing rash on contact with the skin, and can be fatal if swallowed or introduced via injury. When they enter a cocoon, they secrete a valuable silk that worm-farmers can harvest. This kills the worm, but most farmers will leave some on the tree for the next generation, ensuring a continuous "crop" of mulworm silk.
