Allows the caster to alter the form of a creature

Original D&D Edit

Polymorph Self Edit

Debuted in Men & Magic, for the magic-user.

  • Spell Level 4
  • Duration 6 turns + 1 turn/level

The caster adopts the form of any creature they desire. The form does not grant the caster attacks, but the the caster can move as the creatures do.

Polymorph Others Edit

Debuted in Men & Magic, for the magic-user.

  • Spell Level 4
  • Range 6"

Bestows the form -- and all abilities of the form -- of another creature on the target.

Polymorph Any Object Edit

Debuted in Supplement 1: Greyhawk, for the magic-user. Dragon Magazine #12 puts this on the Illusionist spell list as well, at a lower level.

  • Spell Level 8 (magic-user) or 6 (illusionist)
  • Range 24"

Turns some object into another object or creature. The change is permanent if the change is to something related or similar (such as turning stone to sand, a tree into a sapling, a feather into a bird, or an ape into a human). The more different the new form (such as changing a humanoid into a hydra, or changing a basilisk into a gem), the shorter the spell's duration. A piece of rock changed into a human, for instance, will last but a few turns.

ShapechangeEdit

Debuted in Supplement 1: Greyhawk, for the magic-user.

  • Spell Level 9
  • Duration 9 + 1d6 turns, plus 1 turn/level.

The caster gans a new form, and all the abilities of that form. Furthermore, the caster may change their form at will while the spell lasts

Dragon Magazine #12Edit

The spell "polymorph" appears on the Illusionist spell list here, as a new spell, at third level, but it is not given a description.
