Protects the recipient against damage of various sorts. The earliest form of this spell was Protection from Fire and Protection from Lightning, which were mid-tier druid spells.

Original D&D Edit

Protection from FireEdit

The spell first appeared in Supplement 3: Eldritch Wizardry, for the druid.

  • Spell Level 3
  • Duration 3 turns + 1 turn/level

This ward makes the target invulnerable to natural and normal fires, and to the wall of fire spell. It also grants a +2 bonus to saves against fireball spells and dragon fire, and it takes -1 from the damage dealt by those effects, and by balrog immolation.

On a druid, this also confers complete protection from magical fire (including fireball, meteor swarm, Type VI demon immolation, and dragon fire), but once such protection is triggered, the spell will only last until the next turn.

Protection from LightningEdit

The spell first appeared in Supplement 3: Eldritch Wizardry, for the druid.

  • Spell Level 4
  • Duration 6 turns + 1 turn/level

This spell negates the next source of electrical damage the target takes, and then ends.

AD&DEdit

Protection from Fire Edit

Debuted in the Player's Handbook as a druid spell.

Level: 3 School: Abjuration
Components: V, S, M (mistletoe)
Range: Touch Casting Time: 5 segments
Duration: Special Saving Throw: None
Target: Creature touched

If the spell is cast upon the caster, they gain complete invulnerability to normal and magical fire. Track the damage, however, and once they have been dealt more than 12 hp/level fire damage, the spell ends. Otherwise, the spell lasts for 1 turn/level.

If the spell is cast on another creature, they gain invulnerability to normal fire, a +4 bonus to saves against fire attacks, and reduce damage from magical fire by half. Presumably, this protection also lasts for 1 turn/level.

Protection from Lightning Edit

Debuted in the Player's Handbook as a druid spell.

Level: 4 School: Abjuration
Components: V, S, M (mistletoe)
Range: Touch Casting Time: 6 segments
Duration: Special Saving Throw: None
Target: Creature touched

If the spell is cast upon the caster, they gain complete invulnerability to normal and magical lightning and electricity. Track the damage, however, and once they have been dealt more than 12 hp/level lightning damage, the spell ends. Otherwise, the spell lasts for 1 turn/level.

If the spell is cast on another creature, they gain invulnerability to normal lightning and electricity, a +4 bonus to saves against electric attacks, and reduce damage from magical electricity by half. Presumably, this protection also lasts for 1 turn/level.
