Creates an area of utter silence

Original D&D Edit

Silence, 15' RadiusEdit

The spell is introduced in Supplement I: Greyhawk as a cleric spell. Anti-clerics can also use it. Dragon Magazine #12 introduced this spell to the Illusionist, as a 3rd-level spell.

  • Spell Level 2 (cleric, anti-cleric) or 3 (illusionist)
  • Duration 12 turns
  • Range 18"

Creates an area of silence, allowing the caster and their party to move silently, or to silence some object.

Personal SilenceEdit

This spell is introduced in Dragon Magazine #12, as a spell for the Illusionist.

  • Spell Level 2
  • Duration 12 turns

Allows the caster to move in complete silence.

AD&DEdit

Silence, 15' Radius Edit

Debuted in the Player's Handbook as a cleric spell. The Dungeon Master's Guide gives additional information on the spell.

Level: 2 School: Alteration
Components: V, S
Range: 12" Casting Time: 5 segments
Duration: 2 rounds/level Saving Throw: None
Area: 30' diameter sphere

All sound ceases in the area of this spell's effect, which can be centered in space, on an object, or on a creature. It is impossible to cast spells or have spoken conversation in the area. If cast on something that can be moved (such as a small object or a creature), the area moves with the center. An unwilling creature can make a save, and, if the save is successful, the spell effect occurs about one foot behind the target instead.

DM's Advice: The silence does not encompass magically resistant creatures in the area whose resistance works. If the spell is turned, in whole or in part, beyond its radius, its effects are negated
